MARKET BEEF CATTLE


FEEDER STEER AND HEIFER CALVES

***NEW RULE***THE FIRST AND SECOND PLACE FEEDER CATTLE IN EACH GROUP WILL AUTOMATICALLY BE INCLUDED IN THE SALE. Feeder Steer and Heifer calves will be weighed and the animals in each of the following lots will be assigned to show classes on the basis of weight. Class determination will be made after all animals are entered and weighed.

At the time the feeder calves are checked in, members of the Feeder Calf Committee will inspect the animals to insure conformance to proper breed classification.


FEEDER HEIFERS-calved after January 1, 2008

LOT 1: ENGLISH FEEDER HEIFER CALF: These animals must be from a 100% English breed sire and a 100% English breed dam. This includes either straight bred or crossbred sire and dam. English breeds are: Hereford, Angus, Devon, Galloway, Longhorn and British White.

LOT 2: OTHER FEEDER HEIFER CALF: Any Heifer calf not qualifying for Lot 1


FEEDER STEERS-calved after January 1, 2008

LOT 3: FEEDER STEER CALF: Same breed qualifications as Lot 1

LOT 4: OTHER FEEDER STEER CALF: Same qualifications as Lot 2

There shall be a Champion and Reserve Champion selected in each of the Feeder Calf lots. The Champions from each class will be eligible to compete for Overall Grand Champion. The Reserve Champion from the class the Grand Champion represents will be eligible to compete for Overall Reserve Champion.

COUNTY GROUP OF THREE

A county may select one (1) group of three feeder calves from that county to compete in the group of three. The group may be either steers or heifers or a combination. An award will be made to the first place county group.


LOT 5: OPEN MARKET BEEF

Either steers or heifers are eligible to compete in the open market beef classes. Heifers and steers will compete in the same class.

All Market Beef entered in the show must have been calved after January 1, 2007. All animals will be shown at halter, in classes as determined by the Market Beef Committee. The classes will be determined by weight categories.

A Champion and Reserve Champion will be selected. There will be no weight limits on Lot 5 Open Market Beef animals. Animals exhibited in Lot 5 WILL NOT be slaughtered and WILL NOT be sold at the sale. There is no county group of three in this lot.


LOT 6: WJLS BEEF CARCASS FUTURITY: THESE ANIMALS WILL NOT BE SLAUGHTERED. Either steers or heifers are eligible to compete in the futurity show. Heifers and steers will compete in the same class. An exhibitor may show more than one futurity beef animal. Any futurity beef animal weighing less than 1100 pounds or more than 1450 pounds will not be eligible for the futurity show. If your futurity animal does not meet these weight requirements, it may be moved to the Open Market Lot with permission from the WJLS Executive Committee.

Futurity beef must have been entered and exhibited as a feeder calf at the previous year WJLS. The 4-H member buyer must enter the calf in the Futurity competition within one (1) hour following the close of the feeder calf sale the year the calf is exhibited as a feeder calf. All entries will be hot iron marked with a special WJLS iron by the Futurity Committee when entered. Entry fees in the Futurity will be Thirty Dollars ($30.00) per animal. Animals that have been entered in the futurity may be sold, but the manager needs to be notified before February 15,2009 by the seller with the new owner's name, address and the ID of the animal. There is no county group of three in this lot.

LOT 7:WJLS HEIFER FUTURITY: An exhibitor may show more than one futurity heifer. Junior Heifer calves will be eligible for sale. To be eligible for the futuriy the heifer must have been entered and exhibited as a Junior Heifer calf at the previous year WJLS and have been bangs vaccintaed. FEEDER HEIFERS are not eligible. The 4-H member/buyer must enter the calf in the futurity competion within one (1) hour following the close of the Junior Heifer sale the year the calf is exhibited. All entries will be identified by the WJLS Futurity Heifer committee when entered. Entry fees in the Futurity Heifer Show will be Thirty Dollars($30.00) per aminal. An exhibitor may enter more than 1 animal. Heifers that have been entered in the futuriy may be sold, but the manager needs to be notified before May 31, 2009 by the seller with the new owner's name, address and the ID of the heifer. Prizes will be awarded. FUTURITY HEIFERS WILL NOT BE PERMITTED TO SHOW IN REGULAR BREEDING CLASSES. ALL FUTURITY HEIFERS WILL BE PREGNANCY CHECKED AT THE SHOW, IF THEY ARE NOT PREGNANT THEY WILL NOT BE ELIGIBLE FOR THE FUTURITY SHOW.


BREEDING BEEF

NOTE CHANGE: Junior Heifer calves may be sold. No other breeding beef may be sold.

FEMALES entered in the Breeding Beef classes may be purebred, grade or crossbred from any of the recognized beef breeds.

BULL CALVES must be purebred and registered or evidence of eligibility for registry, must be present at time of check in. BULL CALVES must be at least 1/2 blood of the breed class entered.

BREED CLASSIFICATION AND THE ANIMALS BIRTHDATE MUST BE INCLUDED ON THE ENTRY BLANK.

DAIRY CATTLE

Animals shown may be purebred or grade females of any recognized dairy breed. All animals will be shown by breed within each lot. Exhibitors will indicate the breed on the entry blank. A Champion female will be selected from the first place purple ribbon animals from each of the lots. The second place purple ribbon animal from the class represented by the champion is eligible to compete with the other first place purple ribbon animals for Reserve Champion. LACTATING COW: It will be optional for lactating cows to remain on the grounds during the entire show. Cows may be brought in just for the day of the show, but they must be registered at the WJLS office on Wednesday the same as all other animals. Dairy animals will be housed in their county’s barn, not in a separate barn.

SHEEP

Tail docking for lambs is a normal management practice in newborn lambs; however, it is unacceptable to dock lambs by any method including surgical removal of tail tissue or bone.


MARKET LAMBS

(PLEASE NOTE: Muzzling of sheep is not allowed. Exhibitors using this practice will be disqualified from showing.) South Dakota State 4-H sheep showing rules will be followed.

WOOL TYPE SHEEP: Columbia, Correidale, Rambouillet, and Targhee

MEAT TYPE SHEEP: Hampshire, Suffolk, Dorset, Montadale, Oxford, and Southdown

Market lambs may be purebred, grade or crossbred. They will be judged on the basis of conformation and quality of condition. They must have been born after January 1, 2008.

All Market lambs must be shorn. These lambs shall carry not more than ½ inch of staple at show time. Judges will be instructed to discriminate against unshorn lambs.

Market lambs must weigh between 110 and 150 pounds. Any market lamb that weighs less than 110 pounds will automatically be moved to the feeder lamb lot and will not be eligible for sale. Class determination will be made after all animals are entered and weighed.

A Champion Market Lamb will be selected from the first place purple ribbon animals from each lot. The second place purple ribbon animal from the lot represented by the Champion will be eligible to compete with the other first place purple ribbon animals for Reserve Champion. Ewes and wethers will compete in the same feeder lamb class.

SWINE


MARKET SWINE

Market swine may be grade or crossbred. They must be farrowed after February 1, 2008 and will be judged on the basis of market quality and conformation. A Champion Market Swine will be selected from the first place purple ribbon animals from lots 301 and 302. The second place purple ribbon animal from the lot represented by the Champion may compete for Reserve Champion.

Only swine weighting under 285 can be sold.

Animals entered in breeding swine lots may be grade or crossbred, except boars, which must be eligible for registry. Breeding swine may be sold if they weigh less than 285 pounds.

A Champion Boar will be selected from the first place purple ribbon animals from each lot. The second place purple ribbon animal from the lot represented by the champion may compete for Reserve Champion.

LOT 308: SENIOR GILT………. Born between January 1 and February 28, 2008

Champion and Reserve Champion Gilt will be selected following the same procedure for boars.

COUNTY GROUP OF THREE SHOW- A county may select one (1) group of (3) breeding swine to compete in the County group of three show. Groups may be either boars or gilts or a combination. An award will be made to the first place county group.


NON-LIVESTOCK EXHIBITS

All non-livestock exhibits will receive purple, blue, red or white ribbons as designated by the official show judges.

WOOL EXHIBITS

Fleeces entered in the following lots may be from any ewe owned by the exhibitor. It shall be the responsibility of the exhibitor to see that their fleece is entered in the correct lot according to wool grade. All wool will be judged as commercial wool. Yield of clean wool, length of staple, uniformity of grade, condition of fleece, soundness, purity, character and color will all be considered in placing. Wool exhibits will not be sold.

A Champion fleece will be selected from the first place purple ribbon exhibit from each lot. The second place purple ribbon fleece from the lot represented by the champion is eligible to compete for Reserve Champion.

RANGE AND PASTURE EXHIBITS

Any bonafide 4-H member, (beginner, junior or senior) enrolled in this project area in their county may exhibit in this area (See Range & Pasture Collection & Exhibit Guide for complete exhibit instructions, plant list, etc. which is available at your local county Extension office).

Collection may be exhibited in tubs, books or other appropriate storage devices. Each specimen shall be an entire uncut plant (root, stem, leaves, flowering parts.) Folded specimens are acceptable (if folded, fold in a reverse N so that the flowering part or seed head is pointed up and the root is down). Weed specimens should not be in the mature seed stage, if in the seed, the seed head should be encased in a plastic bag.


BEGINNER LOTS

Beginners make an expandable collection, to which additional plants are added to each level. A beginner plant collection label must be used

LOT B3221: Level 1—A collection of 10 plants (must include 2 grasses, 4 forbs & 1 shrub).

LOT B3222: Level 2—A collection of 18 plants (must include 5 grasses, 8 forbs & 3 shrubs).Add to your level 1 collection, for a total of 18 plants in your exhibit.

A forage exhibit shall contain a combination of any three of the following in sheaves or small bales. Sheaves should be at least four inches in diameter. Bales should contain approximately one cubic foot. Silage exhibits should consist of two quarts.
