LIVESTOCK JUDGING CONTEST
****NOTE**** WJLS RULES ARE ALL TEAM MEMBERS ARE TO BE FROM THE COUNTY THEY ARE IN 4-H IN AND THEY CAN’T CROSS OVER INTO A DIFFERENT AGE GROUP
The livestock judging contest is open to all 4-H members and FFA members attending the show regardless of previous placing at this or any other show. Remember this is a contest not a school!!
Judging Contest Rules
Every contestant in the Livestock Judging Contest is expected to follow the instructions given by the superintendent of the judging contest and by their respective group leaders. Every contestant should provide themselves with pencil and card for taking notes.
Every contestant in the livestock judging contest must do his or her own judging. Any conference with other contestants or with any one else, except the group leader, will be considered a violation of this rule and the CONTESTANT WILL BE DISQUALIFIED.
All contestants in the Senior and Junior divisions are permitted to take notes on their placing for the purpose of developing a set of reasons. All contestants in both divisions will give their reasons WITHOUT USING NOTES. Violation of this rule will result in a minimum of 10 points being deducted from the reasons score. Contestants on judging teams may not cross over into a different age group.
,b>LIVESTOCK JUDGING AWARDS:
Special awards for first place winners in all 4-H divisions. Denver Trip awarded to the top four Senior judges.
Rosette ribbons will be given to the second through the fifth places in all division, no ribbons to other contestants.
LIVESTOCK TO BE JUDGED: If stock is available classes will be as follows: Breeding Cattle, Market Cattle, Breeding Sheep, Market Sheep, Breeding Swine and Market Swine.
RULES ON TIE BREAKING: If ties occur within the first five places of any of the 4-H contest, the tie will be broken in favor of the individual or team having the highest total reasons scores. If reason scores are equal between the tying parties, contestants will be required to give an additional set of reasons to the contest co-chairman and their scores will determine the winner.
4-H BEGINNERS LIVESTOCK JUDGING CONTEST
The beginner livestock judging contest is open to all 4-H members that are 8 years of age and less than 11 years of age on January 1, 2009.(Ages 8, 9 and 10). All beginner 4-H members not registered as members of a county team may judge as individuals and will be eligible for individual awards. Six classes of livestock will be judged. No oral reasons will be given.
4-H BEGINNER LIVESTOCK JUDGING TEAM CONTEST
Any county may enter a 4-H Beginner livestock judging team in the contest. A team shall consist of at least four (4) and not more than six (6) members from their county. All team members shall be 8 years of age and less than 11 years of age on January 1, 2009. All team members must be a bonafide 4-H member but need not be a WJLS exhibitor. The total of the four highest scores will be used as the team score.
4-H JUNIOR LIVESTOCK JUDGING CONTEST
The Junior Livestock judging contest is open to all 4-H members that are 11 years of age and less than 14 years of age on January 1, 2009 (Ages 11, 12 and 13). All junior 4-H members not registered as members of a county team may judge as individuals and will be eligible for all individual awards. Six classes will be judged and one set of oral reasons will be given.
4-H JUNIOR LIVESTOCK JUDGING TEAM CONTEST
Any county may enter a 4-H Junior Livestock judging team in the contest. A team shall consist of at least four (4) and not more than six (6) members from their county. All team members shall have been 11 years of age and less than 14 years of age on January 1, 2009. All team members must be a bonafide 4-H member, but need not be a WJLS exhibitor. The total of the four highest scores will be used as the team score.
4-H SENIOR LIVESTOCK JUDGING CONTEST
The 4-H Senior Livestock judging contest is open to all 4-H members that are 14 years of age and less than 19 years of age on January 1, 2009. All senior 4-H members who are not registered members of a county team may judge as individuals and will be eligible for all individual awards. Six classes of livestock will be judged and two sets of oral reasons will be given.
4-H SENIOR LIVESTOCK JUDGING TEAM CONTEST
Any county may enter a senior team in the contest. A team shall consist of at least four (4) and not more than six (6) members from their county. All team members shall be 14 years of age and less than 19 years of age on January 1, 2009. All team members must be a bonafide 4-H member, but need not be a WJLS exhibitor. The total of the four highest scores will be used as the team score.
FFA LIVESTOCK JUDGING CONTEST
FFA members may judge individually with the 4-H members, or may judge in a group under the supervision of their instructor, but shall not compete for the 4-H awards. All contestants must register at the time and place designated in the show schedule.
MEATS IDENTIFICATON CONTEST
The Meats ID contest will be a joint contest involving both the WJLS and the Western Consumer & Science Show participants. All 4-H members are eligible to compete in the Meats ID contest. THIS IS A CONTEST NOT A SCHOOL. The contest will consist of the Identification of 25 cuts of meat consisting of Beef, Pork, Lamb (if available) and variety meats. Contestants must identify the kind of meat, the name of the retail cut, and the method of cooking (moist or dry). Only National Meat Board terminology will be used. There will be awards for the Top Senior, Top Junior, Top Beginner and Top Adult judge. Rosette ribbons will be awarded to the 2nd-5th places in all divisions, no other ribbons awarded.
GRASS AND RANGE PLANT IDENTIFICATION CONTEST
All 4-H members and adults attending the WJLS are urged to participate in this contest. The Official judge and the range plant committee will select the specimens that will be identified. All contestants will do their own judging. Any conservation with anyone other than contest officials or reference to any other material, exhibits or displays will be considered a violation of contest rules, and will result in the contestant being disqualified from the contest. Contestants are expected to stay in the area where the ID material is displayed until they have completed the contest and turned in their contest sheets. There will be a division of 4-H senior, junior, beginner and adult. There will be awards for the Top Senior, Top Junior, Top Beginner and Top Adult judge. Rosette Ribbon will be awarded to the 2nd-5th places in all divisions, no other ribbons.
NATIONAL WESTERN STOCK SHOW TRIP
Western Junior Livestock Sow participants who meet the qualifications listed below and who desire to compete for an all expense paid trip to the Denver area and the National Western Stock Show should obtain a WJLS point sheet. Point sheets are available from the County 4-H office, WJLS website or from the WJLS Manager. This point sheet must be completed accurately and delivered to the WJLS office by WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 7, 2009. Trip applicants must be a Senior 4-H members who are exhibitors in the current WJLS and have exhibited at a minimum of three (3) WJLS (including the current show). This trip will be awarded to senior 4-H members on the basis of point sheet totals. The number of trips to be awarded will be dependent on the number of trip sponsorships available. Anyone who has previously received a WJLS Denver Trip is not eligible for a second trip. However, 4-H members who have earned an award trip based on the livestock judging contest may compete for a trip based on the point sheets. 4-H members or chaperones that violate the WJLS code of conduct or break the law will be required to reimburse the WJLS for their trip expenses.
SCHOLARSHIPS
Any current show exhibitor, who is a high school senior in the fall of the current calendar year, is eligible and encouraged to apply for the scholarships listed. Each applicant must fill out ONE SCHOLARSHIP application blank to be considered for all scholarships.
Each applicant must submit the entry blank plus his or her most recent grade point transcript no later than noon WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 7, 2009.
LANGE SCHOLARSHIP: One $100.00 scholarship will be awarded for the second semester of an approved accredited program.
HARRINGTON SCHOLARSHIP: One $125.00 scholarship will be awards for the second semester of and approved accredited program.
RASMUSSEN TRUST: Three $500.00 scholarships will be awarded for the second semester of an approved accredited program.
RAY GODFREY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP: One $500.00 scholarship will be awarded for the second semester of an approved accredited agricultural related program.
